Siddhartha is a spiritual "coming of age" story that portrays an individual's process of discovery of the buddha-nature within against the backdrop of a spiritual quest in ancient India during the time of the historical Buddha.  Siddhartha's own story parallel's and intersects with that of the historical Buddha.  It is the story of the "Buddha-archetype" told with Hesse's own individual "spin" (Indeed, the names Siddhartha and Gotama -- Siddhartha's closest companion in the story -- are themselves names associated with the individuality of the Buddha himself.)

Siddhartha can trigger and inspire one's own process of awakening, and help in seeing the necessity of finding one's own path.
