The Story of Doctor Dolittle ranks among the classics of children's literature.  The story of the noble doctor whose love of animals leads him to an adventure to Africa to save the monkeys dying there by the thousands of a strange illness.  Dolittle's secret is that he has mastered the art of talking with animals, thanks to his friend the Parrot.  Although his fondness for animals drives away all the (paying) human customers, his animal frineds always make sure that he is well provided for, one way of the other.

In the end he is rewarded with a special gift from the apes and monkeys that provides him with a secure income for life upon his return to England.
