The Worm Ouroboros by E. R. Eddison
Title Information The Worm Ouroboros is a fantasy saga in the spirit of Tolkein's Lord of the Rings. Indeed, Tolkein praised the work as "The greatest and most convincing writer of 'invented worlds' that I have read." The story describes the endless struggle between Witchland and Demonland, two of the imaginary lands that populate the geography of Eddison's "Middle Earth". The story fuses the feeling of Medieval and Norse sagas in an imaginary world called "Mercury." Ouroboros is the legendary snake who eats its own tail, and the story itself reflects cycles and recurrence of themes and events. Many of the elements of the story were first conceived by Eddison as a young child. Format: Sony Reader
